How to properly dose edibles
There is no real "right" edible dose for anyone, there are so many factors that come into play outside of the dosage, like your tolerance and general body chemistry. The most important one is your intention. Are you looking to: have fun, help with pain, or take the edge slightly off? This also defines which cannabinoids you should ingest, but today we will cover THC edibles
If this is your first time trying a certain product, even if it says it is the same dose as another product you are familiar with, eat just 1 or 1/2 of your normal dose. See how you feel after 1-2 hours, then decide whether to dose more or not. You can always eat more, but you can't un-eat too much. THC edibles can be a little psychoactive, so set and setting are everything. Feeling safe, and being in a good place will only help you have a more pleasant experience.
If you have chronic pain, it's good to keep a journal of the dosage and effects. Over time, you'll know how much you can increase your dose for maximum relief. Keep in mind that different edible potencies are not equivalent. THC potency is measured by the amount of THC contained in the product, but edibles are also often made with CBD and other cannabinoids. This means that your body may only be absorbing a fraction of the THC in each bite (depending on how they are dosed), and could also affect the rate at which your body metabolizes the THC.
For THC edibles, your body is absorbing 11-Hydroxy-THC which is the main active metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol, which is formed in the body after decarboxylated cannabis(warmed up weed) is consumed. This is different from smoking or vaporizing which results in 4-Hydroxy-Tetrahydrocannabinol being produced instead.
You are consuming a different type of THC by eating an edible vs. smoking, so your dosage should be lower if you don't want to have too intense of an experience. Also keep in mind that edibles take much longer to absorb into your system. One dose may take up to 30 minutes -2 hours to fully activate in your body's endocannabinoid system, but has effects that can last 6-12 hours once activated in your body.
Once again, please remember, all of these factors are subjective to your tolerance, chemistry, and intention. However, here are some general dosage guidelines:
Newbies: 5-10mg
Regular Consumers: 10-25mg
Heavy Consumers: 20-40mg
Be safe, and remember that this plant is our friend. It is here to help us, not hurt anyone. Should you have an emotionally challenging experience, concentrate on breathing, drink water, you are not in danger, maybe call someone you love and trust if you aren't already around them, it will pass.
